What We Do
Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles operates twenty-three programs serving destitute children and families, runaway teens, the homeless and the forgotten elderly.
The family has always been the focus of our mission and our services have expanded to assist all ages in the family unit. Today we are continuing a battle that sometimes seems overwhelming. Our commitment to bring lasting solutions, not just temporary comfort, has led us to look to new ways to support individual growth and self-sufficiency.
A Community of Angels
For two years, beginning in 2001, Volunteers of America launched a public art project called “A Community of Angels.” Developed in association with the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Volunteer Bureau of the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles, a Community of Angels was one of the largest and most popular public art exhibits ever staged in the City of Los Angeles. More than 200 angels were decorated by local and international artists to send a message of hope about our city. The colorful angels, which stand 6’4” high, were placed in the lobbies and courtyards of businesses throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
The angels served as a unique marketing program for participating businesses and organizations that drew media attention and create greater ties to the city. It also provided an excellent promotional vehicle to present products and or services to southern Californians through art. Many of the angels were featured in a book entitled A Community of Angels - Los Angeles.
The project was initiated by the Volunteers of America to raise funds to support vital programs for youth. Now that our exhibitions are over, you have an opportunity to own one of these beautiful pieces of artistic sculpture. A few of the angels that do not have a permanent home are now available for auction. Funds raised through the sale of these angels will be used to continue our programs for youth at risk.
All of the angels that are for sale are pictured on our website at www.voala.org. For more information or if you have any questions, please send email us at
