Veterans' Services

Responding to the challenges facing veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq is a top priority at VOALA.  Far too many veterans suffer physical injuries and invisible wounds including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which make the transition to civilian life very difficult.

PROGRAMS to MEET THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF VETeranS AND THEIR FAMILIES

HOLLYWOOD VETERANS CENTER is a residential facility for US Military veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, that are experiencing severe levels of difficulty readjusting to civilian life. The men and women in our program have the goal of obtaining permanent housing, financial security, and a personal support system. What makes the program at the center unique is our individualized approach and a focus on compassion and tolerance: we will emphasize service that builds personal growth, self-determination, and community reinforcement; we will take measures to ensure family preservation and/or reunification; and we will recognize and celebrate the achievements of the individual.

The center’s program offers housing, meals, and an innovative “low-barrier” treatment for up to one year, with wrap-around services that include: Physical and Mental Health Care, Addiction Treatment and Relapse Prevention, Groups: Post-Deployment, HIV Awareness, Anger Management, Seeking Safety, Classes: Health, Nutrition and Fitness, Critical Thinking, Life Skills, Job Preparedness, Daily Meditation.

VOALA TRANSITION HOUSE Our 20,000 sq. ft., 150 bed service center provides residential and non-residential programs to serve as many as 4,000 people annually.  Services include emergency and transitional shelter, jobs, corrections and addiction programs geared specifically towards veterans.  Meetings are held 3x daily on weekdays and 2x on weekends for AA, NA, CA, HIV Awareness, and other self–help groups.

THE BARRACKS offers transitional housing beds, classrooms and a computer center for chronically homeless veterans, along with job training and placement, and permanent housing referrals. VOALA has implemented a comprehensive, culturally-appropriate, residential program integrated with mental health/substance abuse treatment, case management, supportive services, peer-based recovery and aftercare services.  While there is an integration of program components to meet clients’ holistic needs, VOALA aligns its service approach most closely with the principles of Housing First.

Additional therapeutic approaches/opportunities utilized include: Motivational Interviewing, Thinking for a Change, Anger Management, Seeking Safety, AIDS Awareness, and Health and Wellness.  In addition to the services offered in house by VOALA, participants are encouraged to go to outside AA/NA groups, and provided transport to the VA where participants can receive mental health, medical and dental services.
