Volunteers of America Success Stories

Helping Those Who Help Themselves
by Briant R. Leavitt, Job Developer

From the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program

Volunteers of America helps veterans who have fallen on hard times get themselves back on track with vocational training, employment counseling, housing, and more.

Mr. H is one of over 200 veterans who have found employment through our offices. Mr. H is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the Navy from 1967 to 1970. Through a blind twist of fate, Mr. H lost his roommate and his job at the same time. Lacking the resources to handle the rent by himself, he became homeless. Mr. H found his way to the Veterans administration and stable housing.

Down, but not out, Mr. H enrolled in our Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program in February. Mr. H’s assessment showed he had extensive experience in the security field. Armed with job support services from his Job Developer and a strong will to succeed, Mr. H began his quest for financial independence. In March, his rigorous employment search paid off in the form of a full time security position with a local security service.

He celebrated his one year anniversary on the job this past spring.  While we helped him with job search and retention services, it is Mr. H who has truly helped himself.
