Programs and Services at Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America is a national human services organization dedicated to bringing immediate relief to those in need. It has been named one of "America's Best-Run Charities" by Fortune Magazine.

Over one hundred years ago, Volunteers of America started its services in the Los Angeles community with a home for orphaned children. At the time, Los Angeles had only 100,000 residents. As the community grew, Volunteers of America continued to expand its services to keep up with the additional challenges brought on with the influx of new and diverse residents.

Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is committed to bringing lasting solutions, not just temporary support. Each year it serves more than 35,000 residents of the Los Angeles area, especially children and families. Volunteers of America's more than 30 programs include services for:

  • Children and Families
    Numerous services including day care, after-school programs, Head Start and Early Head Start, summer camp, literacy, employment counseling and placement.

  • Youth and Education 
    Girls Inc, Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search, Positive Alternatives 
  • Elderly
    Programs include assisted living and companion pet care.
  • Homeless 
    Emergency outreach and shelter to individuals and families, vocational training and housing. Food, clothing, rent assistance, and transportation for individuals or families in crisis. Literacy, employment counseling and placement.
  • Recovery and Rehabilitation 
    Residential and outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addiction and educational programs to help prevent substance dependency and abuse. Rehabilitation of ex-offenders through supervised residential programs that include vocational counseling and referrals. 
  • Low-Income Housing
    Affordable or subsidized housing is provided to families, elderly and people with disabilities.
