"I support Volunteers of America because they have been nourishing the lives of the poor elderly in Los Angeles for more than a hundred years, helping seniors maintain their dignity and independence to live more fulfilling lives. Please join me."

| It is alarming to learn that nearly half of the senior population in Los Angeles is living in poverty and cannot afford to pay for their most basic needs. The plight of poor elderly women is worse, and life is even tougher for widows and other older women living alone.
VOALA is able to provide a wide variety of services to impoverished seniors due of the generosity of our donors. Here's a little story about Florence O'Neill, one of the recipients of that generosity:
Florence is 83 years old. She lives in a tiny apartment with her one and only remaining family member: her cat Tigerlily. She lives on a small social security check that she eagerly watches the mailbox for each month.
And thanks to VOALA’s Senior Companion Pet Program, Florence can buy pet food and receive veterinary care for her beloved Tigerlily without having to worry about how she will be able to afford her own medication.
Betty White and other members of the Hollywood community have come together over the years and rallied for VOALA and our programs for the elderly through the I Remember Mama and Christmas to Remember events. Of all the VOALA programs for seniors, Betty especially loves the Companion Pet Program that helps Florence and Tigerlily.
