| My best friend ... My best friend is Ruth Messenger Gilman. She and I started our first jobs at R.C.Knox Insurance Co. in Sept. 1938. We were new to the world of business and spent some of our work hours talking across the files that separated our desks until her boss or mine came into view. Our parents let her stay at her house while her parents went on a camping vacation for two weeks. The next 2 weeks we spent at Ruth's apartment while her folks went on vacation. The next 2 weeks we spent together at my Grandfather's cottage at the beach. All this time we lived on dishes of tuna fish, peas and mushroom soup on toast, and ice cream. At the end of the 6 weeks, I broke out in hives! We still meet every time we can for lunches with our husbands but the men hardly have a chance to say much! Ruth is a very even-tempered, sweet person, mother of 4 children, grandmother of about 18. Her husband has had a stroke, but she has taken everything in stride and is a super nurse and help to him. |
